The Library of the Dead is a short adventure set in the Caermarthen Library, the ancient institution that has stored books and documents in one form or another since the city’s founding over 800 years ago. The current iteration of the library, built by the illustrious Errol Marthen 400 years ago, provides many public library services to the city, including a popular children’s room and the city archives. However, any building this old has plenty of history, and it seems the Library’s has come back to haunt it...literally. Each of the Library’s three main sections, the Children’s Room, the Archives, and the Non-Fiction section seems to be plagued by troublesome or even malevolent spirits. However, the Librarians of Caermarthen believe that every patron and every question deserves to be heard, not exorcised, so they’ve hired a party of adventurers—skilled mediums, wizards, clerics—to investigate the strange disturbances in the library and see what these spirits really need.
Caermarthen is a bustling trade town in the great north of Faerun, a veritable refuge from the dangerous wastes of the Silver Marches. While outside the city gates, the cold winds blow and wild beasts roam, an unusual arcane weather pattern makes the city relatively temperate and keeps its citizens well-fed and warm. Once the site of a profitable silver mine, when the ore dried up, the city pivoted to become a safe waypoint for travelers and traders.
